AQIB FIAZ is still determined to reach the top despite a setback when he stepped into the big time.

Popular Aqib was quietly fancied by the VIP team to capture the vacant Commonwealth Super-Featherweight title in October 2023 when he challenged Reece Bellotti.

It was a closely fought contest, but Bellotti’s experience told as the fight unfolded and Fiaz was rescued when compassionate trainer Jamie Moore threw in the towel during round eight.

The talented Oldham youngster turned in March 2019 and won four rounders against Ibrar Riaz, Ben Fields and Daniel Alder before moving up to six rounds and winning every round against Jamie Speight.

Those performances helped earn the Oldham man a promotional deal with Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom.

Aqib fought on one of Hearn’s swanky Fight Camp cards in August 2021 and despite some personal problems away from boxing outscored Kevin Baldospino over eight rounds.

Following the death of his mother, Aqib took some time away, but returned in June 2022 and easily outpointed Cristian Narvaez over six rounds before the year ended and outpointed Jordan Ellison and Diego Valtierre.

His first career stoppage came about in March 2023. Although he floored Dean Dodge in round one, it wasn’t until the eighth round that he forced the ref’s intervention.

As an amateur, he represented his country at Senior level twice. In 75 amateur bouts, Fiaz won nine Area Titles and a National Youth Title at 60kg in 2017.
